Sunburst Youth Academy in Los Alamitos recently premiered a compelling 15-minute short film that showcases the remarkable journey of its Class 36 cadets, highlighting their physical, academic, and life skills development over a 22-week residential program. The film, created by the academy’s Student Media Team with support from OCDE’s Educational Technology Services and Air Force photojournalist Crystal Housman, was screened during the cadets’ final evening before Thanksgiving, serving as a reflection of their progress and resilience. An edited version will also be featured at the upcoming graduation ceremony, emphasizing the program’s success in fostering discipline, recovery of credits, and essential life skills in a structured, military-style environment. Operated in partnership with the California National Guard’s Task Force Torch, Sunburst is part of OCDE’s ACCESS program, which offers tuition-free, alternative education for students aged 15½ to 18. Led by Principal Dinah Ismail and Lt. Col. Sarah Rambo, the academy has seen its largest class in history, with an equal gender balance for the first time in nearly a decade. The program’s recognition as one of Orange County’s Impact Schools underscores its growing influence and success in transforming youth lives. Recent developments include the expansion of the program to serve more students, increased partnerships with local military and community organizations, and the integration of advanced educational technology to enhance learning experiences. Additionally, Sunburst has received grants aimed at expanding mental health support for cadets, recognizing the importance of holistic development. The academy’s alumni have gone on to pursue higher education, military careers, and community leadership roles, demonstrating the program’s long-term impact. As the holiday season approaches, Sunburst continues to inspire hope and resilience among youth, emphasizing the importance of structured support systems in overcoming adversity and building brighter futures.
